Using Your Electric Scooter in the Snow
Published July 13, 2022
You wake up to the sight of a huge white blanket of snow covering the ground as far as you can see. As electric scooter enthusiasts we’re sure your mind jumped to the same place as ours… can I use my electric scooter in the snow?
Your Scooter
The first thing to consider when thinking about using your electric scooter in the snow is the scooter itself. As always, we recommend following the manufacturer’s guide for your electric scooter. Some scooters, such as those with larger tyres, a battery that can withstand low temperatures, or one with strong water-resistance ratings, may be better suited to the snow.
It’s important to think about how much snow there is, and the safety risks involved. We recommend caution if you decide to take your electric scooter for a ride in the snow, and due to the shorter (therefore darker) days in winter, wear high-visibility clothing wherever you ride.
If you’re confident in your scooter’s ability to withstand the harshness of the winter, we have some tips and tricks for scooting around in the snow.
Tips and Tricks
As with any form of travel under snowy conditions, it’s worth adding an air of caution to your rides. Don’t go full speed around an icy corner, go for smooth gentle steering to avoid slipping on the ice. If possible, try replacing the tyres with a winter or off-road tread. Tyres that are too hard will feel like trying to scooter on ice!
The cold is likely to make your range shorter due to the cold, make sure to park it somewhere warm. This is also key to protecting your battery, make sure it’s not cold before charging. Let the battery gradually warm up inside before recharging.
Finally, whilst it may seem obvious, wear warm clothes! Nothing will ruin your ride faster than numb fingers and the harsh wind making you feel like an icicle!
