Renting An E-Scooter

Renting An E-Scooter

The luxury of being able to get around a town without using a car, or overusing your leg is amazing. Electric Scooters (and electric bikes for that matter) are the most sustainable way of doing this. So is there anything you need to know about the e-scooter rental before hopping onto one?

Are They Legal?

First of all, this is commonly the question people wonder all the time about e-scooter rentals. But yes, they are legal – this isn’t to say private e-scooters are yet though. Read here to find out more on the queen’s legalisation speech.  As long as you stay safe and don’t do anything dangerous on them, there would be no reason for any kind of prosecution. You should always do further research if you are concerned about anything.

Where Can I Find Them?

Finding an e-scooter rental, or an e-bike rental, is becoming more and more popular. Often they will be found in bulk on a bike rack. However, when someone has finished their journey riding the e-scooter, they will leave it in the spot they finished it in. Once they hop off, it is completely yours to use!

They can also be found in shopping centres (mainly the outdoor ones) and in towns to make transporting around easier. Another thing that will help you find an e-scooter rental is downloading an app. Realistically, it depends where in the world you are that will decipher what company is used – most popular ones are Lime, Ginger, Beryl and Bolt. A simple search on your phone will help you find local ones.

How Much Does An E-Scooter Rental Cost?

The pricing of e-scooter rentals varies depending on what city you’re in. It will almost always be an initial cost which you pay to unlock the e-scooter, and then a price per minute, for example.

Taking information from this guide on the 30th August 2022, I can see that the Beryl scooters have a few options to choose from. Number one is the Pay As You Ride option – It is £1.50 to unlock a e-scooter rental and then 10p per minute. The second option is Minute Bundles. Here you pay the initial £1.50 and then it’s 5p per minute so it is 5p per minute deducted to your overall balance.

That was just an example of the Beryl scooters, and if you want to find out more about the e-scooter rental services near you, you can download the app.

Other Information

There are a few other things to know before jumping on one of the e-scooter rentals.

The first is that it can sometimes require to see a driving license in order to use the e-scooter – a provisional is usually acceptable.

Secondly, linking on to the previous mention, there could be a set age limit. Some will be 17+, others will be 18+. It is always important to check this before getting onto one.

That’s all there is to know about getting on an e-scooter rental, please stay safe when transporting on one.
