A Guide to E-Scooter Repairs

Owning an electric scooter is a fantastic experience. Thanks to their portability, you have the freedom to go wherever you like, whenever you like. However, like any vehicle owner, you need to be mindful of maintenance. In some cases, scooter issues can be fixed on your own. But, while many of these scenarios are easily fixable, it is important to be safe. If you don’t feel comfortable, contact a professional with experience in e-scooter repairs.

Battery Issues

Dead batteries can be a result of a defect, improper charging, cold temperature, or degrading battery capacity. Dead batteries are different from low batteries. A dead battery does not turn on, while a low battery can quickly be resolved by charging. To avoid an entirely dead battery, make sure that your battery doesn’t run out of charge. Charge your electric scooter battery at the end of each day.

You may run into the issue where your scooter does run, but it slows down or stops completely after a while. Of course, if you’re going uphill, your speed will reduce naturally. If the scooter slows down on flat ground, you probably have an issue with the battery.

Often, scooters will die prematurely because the batteries are old. They may not hold a charge for long, and it might take longer to recharge them. If that happens, you should consider replacing the batteries.

Engine Issues

Sometimes you will power up your scooter and it will seem slow to react. Other times, it won’t move at all. There are a few solutions for this. If you can barely get the scooter to move, or it won’t go at all, then you may have a fuse problem. The fuse might be blown or flipped.

When that happens, the engine can’t draw power from its battery, and the scooter won’t move. Usually, this is considered a mechanical issue. This means you will need to send it to a professional for repairs.

Electrical Issues

Every electric scooter will have an electrical controller. If a foreign body or water gets in contact with that area, it could affect the circuits. Your scooter might act up, or not turn on at all. Though this can seem a little daunting, you can try to secure wires that have loosened. If that’s not the cause, you may need to send it to someone experienced in e-scooter repairs.

Sometimes the brake lever switch might get turned on accidentally. This will deactivate the throttle control system. The brakes will lock up on your scooter and cause it to shut down. You should also check for loose wires. If reconnecting them doesn’t work, then you may need to seek professional repairs.

If your battery charger is faulty, your scooter won’t be able to start. It’s easy to check for a faulty charger. Plug the charger into an outlet and watch the indicator lights. If they’re not illuminated, then your charger could be defective. If you’d like a more in-depth check, y a voltmeter or multimeter can test the battery charger’s output. Just note that before you check your battery, you should find out the voltage for the battery’s output to your scooter. Make sure that the outlet voltage is compatible with the battery and charger.
