How AI is Driving the Future of E-scooters

Sweden’s innovative Voi Technology is proving that e-scooters are getting smarter! Micro-mobility companies, like Voi, are beginning to see the benefits of AI to enhance the e-scooter experience, not only from an efficiency perspective, but a safety one too.

Imagine an e-scooter that knows when you’re on the pavement, senses people nearby, and adjusts its speed accordingly without you having to lift a finger. Using computer vision, Voi’s scooters improve safety and functionality by automatically detecting the surrounding environment. Since 2022, Voi has been working with Drover AI to achieve this. Specifically, a full-scale launch in 2022 saw hundreds of Voi vehicles fitted with Drover AI’s PathPilot AI technology.

Voi released the Voiager 8 in the first quarter of 2025, with the vehicle being introduced to Europe shortly after. Described on their website as “Our most refined scooter yet pairs sleek, intuitive design with precision paring and a smoother, more stable ride.”

Alongside the hardware of Voi’s incredible vehicles, their mobile app encourages a safer behaviour for their users. A “helmet selfie” feature asks riders to take a picture of themselves, then an AI image detector checks if the helmet is present. “Beginner’s mode” also enables speed limit features and sometimes require action tests to assure the user is comfortable using the bikes/scooters.

Overall, Voi is one of the leading companies in the world at the moment with their brilliant e-scooter designs. Whilst these designs are still new and coming into popularity, it proves how AI can attempt to help users stay safer and enjoy their riding experience even more!
